Important information about your healthcare via text message

Making it easier to communicate with you – we need your consent

We want to make it easier for us to communicate with you, so we are asking for your consent to receiving information from us via text message, which is our preferred method of communication.

There are two types of information we would like to send to you via text message:

  1. Non-clinical information e.g. appointments and review reminders
  2. Clinical information e.g. test results and medication information

Please ensure you read the following terms and conditions before responding to the text message we have sent you.

Terms and conditions

By replying YES to the text message, you are confirming that you understand and agree to the following:

  • You are the legal owner and keeper of this mobile phone number.
  • It is your responsibility to inform the surgery if you change your mobile phone number.
  • You understand that if you were to transfer your number to another individual and not inform the GP surgery, you are risking a breach of your information.
  • We will not use text messaging to relay highly sensitive information such as sexual health results.
  • As with all digital communication, there is a risk (however small) of the message being intercepted or accessed by a third party, for example a friend reading a text message on your phone.
  • We strongly recommend that you use a private mobile number and not a family or shared mobile number. Please note that there is a risk of breaching your information if you use a shared mobile number.

Examples of the types of messages we may send you

Examples of non-clinical information we may send to our patients via SMS

  • “Your prescription is ready to collect from your nominated pharmacy.”
  • “Please can you book a routine appointment with me to discuss your recent test results.”
  • “As discussed on 1st July, you should have received a letter from the hospital by now about your referral. Please let us know if you have not.”
  • “Please remember to book a cervical screening appointment as you are currently overdue. It can help prevent cervical cancer.”
  • “I tried to call you, but couldn’t get through. I will try again later, and the number will show up as ‘Unknown’.”

  • Your Vitamin D level is slightly lower than it should be. Try and spend a bit more time outdoors and eat more foods like mackerel. You can also get supplements at your pharmacy.
  • As discussed, you should take the new medication as follows…and let us know if you have any of the following side effects…
  • Your iron levels are low, please collect a prescription for iron tablets from your nominated pharmacy…


Benefits of us sending information to you via text message

  • Avoid any delay in receiving this information by telephone via the reception team.
  • A reminder about your expected hospital appointment and encourage you to let us know if you are having any problems with this.
  • A reminder to book an appointment for your reviews to minimise the number of calls you may receive.
  • Useful when either expecting a telephone consultation or a member of staff is trying to reach you and the number is unknown.
  • Avoid missing important calls.
  • Instant advice and guidance sent directly from a clinician
  • Signposting to appropriate services
  • Important information regarding your blood levels and advice on the management
  • Information about your medication
  • Avoiding any delay in receiving clinically necessary information
